Inyo study suggests hemp oil helps lower cholesterol

Hemp oil has long been heralded for its numerous health benefits, which have been experienced by many users of the oil, but not fully backed by scientific research. Thankfully,  a recent study has been carried out, which concluded that hemp oil can help to raise the level of good cholesterol in the body.

What Is Hemp Oil?

Hemp Oil is derived from the hemp seed by cold pressing it. The seeds used are from varieties of the cannabis plant, which does not contain significant amounts of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive component of the plant. The oil is usually clear and has little flavor. The industrial version is used in paints, fuel, ink, and plastics, while other types are for making soaps and other body care products.

The known nutrient composition of hemp oil includes omega-6, omega-3 fatty acids, and less oleic acid. It is also known to contain antioxidant properties, magnesium, calcium, and zinc.

The Study of Hemp Oil and Cholesterol levels

Some researchers at The Center for Applied Health Sciences in Ohio and Lindenwood University in Missouri conducted research on the effectiveness of hemp extract on the wellness of healthy individuals who are also overweight. The hemp extract is commercially available and has been designated as GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) by the US Food and Drug Administration.

In this study, there were 65 men and women participants that were all overweight, but otherwise healthy. They were given the hemp oil extract or a placebo for six weeks while on their regular diet and physical activity patterns.

Results of the Study

The results showed that those who consumed the hemp oil showed significantly increased levels of High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, otherwise known as ‘good cholesterol. This was evident in the psychometric measures of the stress response, perceived sleep quantity, and perceived life pleasure.

Implications of the Study

The results of this study give room for discussion on how to use the oil in the medical field best. The debate can also extend to the fitness and nutrition fields. They can also serve as a stepping stone for more research on how consuming hemp oil may enhance the quality of life for people in general with possible additional health benefits.

Health Benefits of Hemp Oil

Let’s now examine more possible benefits of hemp oil, as more conclusive scientific research remains ongoing.

Healthy Skin

The presence of Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids in hemp oil, makes it unique in its ability to heal, moisturize, and restore the skin. For skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis, the Omega 3 element in hemp oil relieves dryness and itching. The Omega 6 element helps to relieve inflammation on the skin, and it supports new skin cells’ growth and regeneration.

Relieve of Pain and Inflammation

The presence of pain in the body can many times be linked to inflammation somewhere within the body. Over time, if inflammation is not treated, it can lead to more severe conditions such as cancer. The anti-inflammatory properties in Omega 6 help to relieve pain and inflammation.

Other possible health benefits include a healthy heart, reduced symptoms of PMS, reduction in muscular tension, weight loss, improved brain function, and finally, treatment of conditions such as diabetes and arthritis.
