inyo Medical Marijuana Study Eases Symptoms in Gynecologic Cancer Patients

Medical cannabis has been a popular remedy for several illnesses, including chronic pain, stress, and epilepsy, among many others. Although there have been multiple studies that second this statement, experts believe there is still a lot to know about the cannabis plant, which is why research around cannabis remains ongoing.

A recent study was conducted on gynecologic cancer patients and how they can benefit from medical cannabis. This blog will discuss what gynecologic cancer is and how women with it have found cannabis to be helpful in relieving some of the symptoms of this disease.

What is Gynecologic Cancer?

Any cancer that appears on women’s reproductive organs is coined as “gynecologic cancer”. It can occur in a woman’s cervix, uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, or vagina, among several other reproductive organs.

According to research, around 26,500 women in the US lose their lives to Gynecologic Cancer each year.

Cannabis helped against Gynecologic symptoms

Fortunately, a recent study found that 70% of the women who consumed cannabis while fighting gynecologic cancer saw significant relief in symptoms.

The study was published in Gynecologic Oncology Report and was conducted on 45 gynecologic cancer patients. 31 out of those 45 women told the researchers that they felt significant relief in at least one symptom. Several women found that medical cannabis consumption relieved more than one cancer symptom, making it easier for them to deal with the illness.

Although the study was small, it was stretched over three years, from 2016 to 2019. During the study, different parameters were monitored, including the frequency of use, side effects, and symptom relief.

Different women were given different formulations of cannabis. While some women smoked medical cannabis with a 1:1 CBD to THC ratio, others used the drug sublingually. Some women were also prescribed multiple formulations of medical cannabis.

The study also concluded that patients suffering from acute pain were given the THC:CBD combination, which helped relieve the patients to an extent.

Researchers prescribing medical cannabis were also concerned about the potential side effects like nausea and dizziness. In fact, around 15% of the participants opted out of the study due to the side effects caused.

Experts suggest that the side effects experienced differ from person to person. In fact, many people don’t face any side effects from medical cannabis consumption, which is one of the many reasons why it is gaining traction across the country.

Other Benefits of Cannabis Consumption for Cancer Patients

Cannabis consumption has been beneficial for cancer patients as it helps relieve several common symptoms.

Nausea and Vomiting

Nausea and vomiting are among the most common symptoms among cancer patients. Studies have shown that patients who use medical cannabis experience significant relief from nausea and vomiting.

Loss of Appetite

Cancer patients lose their appetite over time. In extreme cases, patients tend to face a condition called cachexia, in which your body goes into a severe phase due to malnutrition, losing fat, and muscle mass. Cannabis is known to increase appetite in users, keeping their drive to eat alive, thereby preventing their bodies from entering a dire state.

Chemotherapy

A common treatment of cancer is chemotherapy. Research suggests that consuming cannabis on the side amplified the effects of the treatment, allowing for a better recovery. This research proved that combining CBD with cancer treatments may be beneficial to the recovery process.

In short, consuming cannabis may assist most cancer patients in relieving pain and easing symptoms, be it gynecologic cancer in women or prostate cancer in men.

Prostate Cancer

This is the most common type of cancer among men. In 2021 alone, approximately 250,000 men have been diagnosed with prostate cancer in the US. It’s been found that consuming medical cannabis during the treatment may help in delaying the symptoms, enabling users to prevent cancer cells from spreading.
